Christian Bale is now a villain again, this time in Marvel’s Thor: Love and Thunder. The antagonist is strong. The story follows the comic book plot and Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) is back. There’s, of course, the outrageous humor that is unique to director Taika Waititi. Love and Thunder is a standalone movie that does not live up to Thor: Ragnarok (2017).

Thor Love and Thunder SFlix Review (2022)
Thor has been a element of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for more than a decade, but his standalone films have either been successful or failed to hit the mark completely. Thor: The Dark World (2013) was a lousy entry. Thor: The Origins Story (2011) was a good start. However, Thor: Ragnarok 2017 will be a top choice for everyone’s most-watched five MCU films. Expectations were high ahead of the release due to the return of the Taika Waititi/Hemsworth collaboration.
Gorr (Bale) Gorr (Bale), the god who wants to destroy all gods, hits New Asgard to steal Stormbreaker. Thor must stop the god butcher by joining forces with Tessa Thompson, Korg (Waititi) and Jane Foster, his ex-girlfriend and now Mighty Thor. The story is simple and simple, which is a departure from Marvel’s previous movies. The performances are also very positive. Hemsworth is a great choice for the character who is experiencing having a midlife crisis. However, Bale and Portman make an impact. To prove Bale’s ability as a director, the pre-title credits scene stands. Gorr could well be the next Thanos for MCU that’s in desperate need of good supervillains, and Bale gives a bit of strangeness to the character but there’s not a whole lot more.
Portman portrays Mjolnir’s cancer afflicted ex-girlfriend. Because of how Marvel is eager to hand over the mantles of Hawkeye and, in the next few months, Hulk, to women characters, I first expected that the Mighty Thor to be a similar checkmark on the representation check list. But, the film sets with a touching story behind this scientist who gets to showcase her biceps in several scenes.
Marvel also does its own stretching out in all its cameos. We also get to see the Guardians of the Galaxy cast as well as Sam Neill and Matt Damon reprising their roles as Thor: Ragnarok’s Loki, Odin and Thor and Thor, respectively. We also get Melissa McCarthy and her husband Ben Falcone playing Hela and the director of an Asgardian play as well as the director of an Asgardian play. Waititi, who is now Ragnarok directed the Oscar-winning Jojo Rabbit, is back in his favorite genre. There are hilarious ideas such as the noisy goats, Korg’s narration of Thor’s backstory, Thor doing leg-splits, Valkyrie becoming the ambassador for Old Spice…
There’s also the running gag of Thor searching for his Mjolnir however being terrified of Stormbreaker’s jealousy. These gags, however effective, fall at the expense emotional intensity and help expose the wafer-thin plot as well. Thor: Love and Thunder tackles a range of different kinds of love, from a father-daughter bond to the complicated love story of lovers who are not together… There’s parallels between Gorr losing his faith in the god he worships, Rapu, and Thor becoming disappointed by Zeus (played by Russell Crowe). The possibilities are endless, however…
There are plenty of Easter eggs, and even references to films such as Interstellar and Harry Potter. A shot of Falligar Dead God depicted, straight from comics. We see Hemsworth sporting the original Thor costume that comic book readers will recognize. When Thor shows his true colors during a battle with Zeus, we get to see a tattoo reading ‘RIP Loki and the trickster’s helmet etched on the back of our space Viking. The terrible Necrosword is introduced and it’s fascinating the different weapons shown to be able to control people, given the manner in which Stormbreaker and Mjolnir seem to have their own thoughts.
What we saw with Shang Chi’s ten rings in Ms. Marvel’s mysterious bangle as well as the Ebony blade in the Eternals post-credits scene. The statement “Gods will not empower you but they will empower you” from the new Marvel show, Moonknight, feels very relatable. A little of Valkyrie’s loss in war to her best companion and Korg falling in love with a different Kronan man is also mentioned.
We are reminded of Ragnarok’s color palette in the beginning portion, but the majority of the second part is set in the dark world of black and white. It is true that the monochrome action scenes are quite satisfying.
Hemsworth will continue to be Thor and Thor for the foreseeable future, which is a welcome relief for MCU fans who’ve watched the first Avengers die or hang their heads.
